I’m personally a big fan of playing white noise at night to help improve sleep. Various studies have shown that white noise does actually improve sleep quality, and it can also mask environmental noise – which further improves sleep quality. I personally use white noise in my baby son’s nursery at night, on the Google Home. And how you can trigger them and play them through your Google Home device.
Some sounds are locked but are easily unlocked by just watching a short ad which in my opinion makes this app even better as you don't have to spend any money. But many Google Nest users have had their fair share of issues with this feature like Home and Away routines setup option missing or when the routines and family bells started going off a minute early. Google offers predefined routines but also gives users the ability to create fully custom ones according to their needs.

This is great if you’re like me and listen to music as you nod off to sleep. With your Google Nest or Home speaker or display, you can relax and unwind with a variety of soothing ambient sounds. All of Google's ambient sounds can be played by all Google and Nest smart speakers and displays.
Sleep Sounds - relaxing sounds
Note that Google Home will only continue playing ambient sounds for a maximum of one hour. As far as I know, there’s not yet any way to set a timer in case you want them to run longer. Still, this is a really convenient feature to have for those of us who don’t like falling asleep to total silence. Alexa can also do similar things through installable skills or by playing a white noise track pulled from Spotify, but it’s not quite as seamless as Google’s feature. Thankfully, part of this routing can be as simple as asking the Google Assistant to play soothing sounds to help you get to sleep. The voice assistant is loaded with 15 different ambient sounds, ranging from running water and rainfall, to distant thunderstorms and white noise.
Finally, at the bottom, where it says “And then play…” select “Sounds for sleep”. If you click on the wheel settings right, you can choose the one you like the most. There is rain, sea, stream, river, thunderstorm, forest, night in the field, fireplace, and white noise. All Google Home and Google Nest speakers have Chromecast-like functionality, of course, so you can send any ambient sound or white noise track you like over to the speaker using your phone. Assistant is installed with a default function thanks to which you can ask them to play different soothing sounds, from the water of a river to the birds in a forest, before you go to bed.

Become a premium member for access to 8 hour episodes and ad free listening. “White noise” is among the 14 ambient noises available from Google Assistant, along with “babbling brook,” “fireplace,” “ocean” and others. You can play them for up to 12 hours if not disabled by a sleep timer, and the 2nd-gen Nest Hub has an “auto-off” feature that turns off the sound once you fall asleep. However, due to a bug, the sleep sounds are playing in a loop all night even when the bedtime routine is set to last 1 or 2 hours.
This includes the Google Home, Home Mini and Home Max, plus the Nest Mini, Google Home Hub, and Nest Hub Max. Alternatively, you can ask the Google Assistant on your smartphone, then have the sound play through the phone's speaker, earphones, or through a Bluetooth-connected speaker. Play our carefully selected soothing sounds and you will sleep like a baby. Use the “Bedtime” routine in the Google Home app to automate it! “Routines” are a feature built into the Google Assistant and Nest smart speakers and displays.

We know that asking an AI to read your child a bedtime story is a bit like something from Black Mirror, but your kids might well enjoy it. We all know how important it is to get a good seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night, but sometimes drifting off when we hit the hay can be a real challenge. The latest addition to Google Home’s feature set is a new type of timer. It’s already possible to set timers for things like cooking or game time, but we can now also set a sleep timer that will stop your music playing at a given point in time.
When requesting to hear a fan, Google plays what must be a heavy oscillating fan; I don’t think there’s any way to mimic my cheap desk fan from Target, but this also works. This has been quite an annoying issue as Nest owners wake up to their devices still playing the sounds and they have to manually switch it off every day. Your Google Home ($99 at Target) or Google Nest smart speaker can help you sleep like a baby, whether you had one cup of coffee too many, or you can’t seem to quiet your mind. The device is helpful for scheduling your day, but it’s also handy for unwinding, too. The background sounds of the Calm app will play any time you have the app open.
